For this month’s Artist Spotlight, we are excited to introduce Brian Dale!
Brian is an accomplished knitter whose creativity and dedication to his craft bring a special charm to our store. A resident of Hot Springs, his love for knitting began in 2011 when he joined a weekly knitting group at Java Primo. It was there that he learned his first stitch, the garter stitch, and connected with his mentor, Margaret. His early creations were featured at the Garland County Farmer’s Market and various other shows in Hot Springs Village, where he also took custom orders for shawls and wraps.
Though Brian’s favorite yarn to work with is cotton, it can be hard to come by and costly. To save money he shops at Goodwill, unraveling old sweaters to repurpose the material. This creative approach makes his pieces both eco-friendly and one-of-a-kind. One of the most challenging patterns Brian has tackled is the soda fountain scarf, which is made using a complex series of stitches. Despite several attempts and having to “frog” (rip out) his work multiple times, he stays determined and motivated to learn.
In 2006, Brian was diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. Growing up and living with a learning disability has caused challenges for him when trying to find work. However, understanding his condition and developing coping strategies has helped him navigate through them. His sister Laura feels that knitting has given Brian a purpose, transforming what was once just a hobby into a fulfilling opportunity to experience independence.
Brian enjoys watching old black-and-white movies from the 1930s to the 1950s. Sometimes he combines his two passions by knitting while enjoying classic cinema to create a serene and productive environment. He would like to start traveling more, with Ireland and Scotland being top destinations on his list.
The joy Brian feels when someone purchases his creations is immense.
“It makes me feel good that I’ve been able to spend all that time, effort, and the money getting that stuff and making it. “
His story is a beautiful example of how creativity and community support can enhance the quality of life for individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities. We are proud to support Brian at The Blue Umbrella!
