If you’ve ever walked into The Blue Umbrella and been greeted with a big smile and a friendly invitation to buy a candle, chances are you’ve met our April Artist Spotlight recipient: Kimberly Johnston. With her outgoing personality and a heart as warm as the candles she helps create, Kimberly shines both behind the scenes and at the front of the shop.
Kimberly works in the “Scentsational” room at Arkadelphia Human Development Center (AHDC), where she helps make body scrubs, candles, and her personal favorite – air fresheners. She takes pride in each product, especially her role in preparing candles for production. Kimberly is an essential part of the candle-making process, carefully placing double wicks and metal holders that keep them in place before the wax is poured and then adding finishing touches like labels. She’s been part of the Scentsational team for four years and lights up with joy when customers buy products she has helped make.
Whether she’s chatting with shoppers at events or running deliveries across campus with her signature speed, Kimberly brings energy and kindness to every task. She’s known for her trendy style, her love of word search puzzles, and her sweet tooth – specifically Three Musketeers. When she’s not working, you might find her enjoying dinner at Texas Roadhouse, visiting family, or gearing up for a trip to the State Fair.
Kimberly’s favorite part of coming to work is getting to spend time with AHDC employee Buffie, who she lovingly calls her “mama.” Buffie has been a source of constant support and encouragement for her, and Kimberly says she can always count on Buffie for comfort and good advice.

With her great sense of humor and genuine talent for making others feel welcome, Kimberly brings something truly special to The Blue Umbrella. We are grateful that the store provides a platform for her and other individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to sell their products so they may experience independence and earn income. We’re lucky to have her as part of The Blue Umbrella family.
